What is a dental Crown?
Crowns are discreet facings that are bonded to natural teeth to improve appearance or strengthen those underneath. They can be used for cosmetic improvements or to replace teeth that have been heavily filled or have undergone root canal treatment.
Crowns are often used to improve natural teeth that have been damaged but can also be used for cosmetic purposes to straighten, brighten and whiten your smile. Once fitted, crowns are indistinguishable from your natural teeth and work, bite and chew just like them. Results last 10-15 years!
When might I need a crown?
Crowns can be used in different situations:
- To adequately restore a root-treated tooth
- To restore the shape, appearance, and strength of a heavily filled tooth
- To restore a fractured tooth
- To prevent cracks inside teeth from propagating
- To restore the function and aesthetics of severely worn-down teeth
- To dramatically improve the appearance of discoloured teeth
What type of crowns are there?
There are various types of dental crowns available and materials range from gold to all ceramic. The decision is made together with you and is based on your specific needs and preferences.
These days most of our crowns are made of zirconia. This is an incredibly strong material which is very life-like and mimics natural teeth most accurately. All Zirconia crowns at Vitality in West Sussex are produced digitally, that is, impressions are scanned and the crown is CAD-designed and 3D-printed. The crown is then glazed and beautifully hand-finished by an expert ceramist.
How long does it take to fit a Crown?
Having a crown fitted is a simple, comfortable process that requires between two and four stages. Before we start we would ask you to visit your hygienist to ensure your gums are in great condition before embarking on your crown journey.
Stage One
If your crown treatment is primarily for cosmetic purposes, we will invite you to attend a dental consultation with us to discuss your ideal smile and preview the proposed final result by mocking up your personalised crown design on a model of your teeth. You may also require photographs and x-rays as part of the planning process.
Stage Two
On your next visit to us, our dentists will very carefully reshape your natural teeth to ensure optimum strength. We will then take a mould of your teeth and take photographs, to ensure the fit and aesthetics of your new crown or veneer are perfect. Next, we will apply a temporary crown to make sure your teeth look good while your new crowns are being carefully and skilfully hand-made by our master technicians.
Stage Three
We may ask you to attend for a consultation at our manufacturing laboratory to review colours and designs in more detail.
Stage Four
At your follow-up appointment (usually a week or two later), the superior quality crown will be permanently bonded to your natural teeth, on your approval of its final appearance. Your strong, fracture-resistant tooth or your new, brighter smile will then be complete for you to enjoy.
